The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting temporary Field Inspectors in the Plant Industries division located in the Treasure Valley.

This position is approximately 40 hours a week and is expected to begin around mid to late May and will end around October 27. The field office is in Boise; often, the successful candidates will report to work at the Nampa meeting point. 

SPECIAL NOTIFICATION: This non-classified position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission. It does not come with benefits.  

Example of Duties

Field inspectors are responsible for examining crop fields for signs and symptoms of plant pathogens and pests. The use of policy and systematic procedures is of the utmost importance. Collecting, documenting and properly storing samples; following proper sanitation protocol; and ability to read maps are all essential skills. Field inspectors may work independently or in groups of varying sizes. The ability to keep accurate records is required for such information as inspection locations, mileage, samples, and time spent conducting an inspection. The workday is spent in a variety of locations and requires travel between fields.

Minimum Qualifications

These qualifications are mandatory requirements:

  • Read road maps
  • Hike or walk for an extended period over long distances on uneven, rough or off-road terrain with or without a reasonable accommodation
  • Work in various types of weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain, etc.)
  • Possibility of working early mornings, evenings, weekends, or long hours
  • May have to use your own reliable transportation to go between job sites
  • Rubber boots are required and may be reimbursed by the agency at the end of the season
  • Plant pathology or field inspection experience is desirable
  • Must be able to communicate with farmers and field representatives
  • Must be 16 years or older

Desirable Qualifications:

This qualification is not required; however, if you have the related background, it may increase your score.

  • Biology, ecology or field inspection experience
