As the role of the Idaho Department of Education (Department) is to provide leadership and guidance for informed decision making to school leaders and educators, the Content & Curriculum Director oversees programs related to curriculum, content standards, academic achievement, and other school-based activities designed to improve classroom instruction and promote high levels of student achievement. The director supervises a team of Idaho Department employees and manages academic program contracts, statewide instructional support, and leads work related to state content standards, curricular resources, and professional development.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Oversees the Math, Science, ELA/Literacy, Social Studies, STEM, NASA, School Health, Humanities, Gifted and Talented content standards and curricular materials programs.
• Oversees the implementation of statewide Professional Learning Communities supports, training, and networks.
• Works with and supports other Department directors in program planning, development, and delivery as well as compliance with state and federal guidelines.
• Actively participates in program evaluation.
• Supports and provides professional development for the Idaho Principals Network and the Idaho Superintendents Networks for Idaho administrators.
• Identifies and promotes best practices in Idaho schools, including school visits and learning from building leaders.
• Consults with other state programs to learn best practices to be used as possible models in Idaho.
• Leads teams reviewing and recommending revisions to the Idaho content standards.
• Oversees program budgets and authorizes expenditures.
• Works with federal, state, local agencies, citizen groups and grantors/contractors.
• Trains and advises on program and implementation of assessment policies and best practices.
• Oversees contracts with vendors responsible for developing and administering the statewide content standards.
• Oversees contractor reports to determine program progress, quality and quantity of service and compliance with laws, standards and guidelines.
• Facilitates meetings on behalf of the Chief Operating Officer as needed.
• Liaises with State Board of Education staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in an education field.
• Five to eight years of supervision and/or administrative experience in education or a related field.
• Experience designing and providing high-quality professional development aligned to current best practices.
• Experience in implementing and providing training for Professional Learning Communities.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and staff members in a fast-paced environment, effectively manage a staff with diverse talents and projects.
• Experience with program management, planning and coordinating programs and projects.
• Good public relations and interpersonal skills.
• Experience interpreting federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and policies and advising on their requirements.
• Experience managing contracts, from developing requests for proposals to managing the contract for services.
• Willingness to lead through change.
• Ability to communicate, collaborate and effectively solve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (with or without accommodation) 

• Dexterity to operate office tools and equipment;
• Ability to perform standard office administrative functions, including but not limited to: typing, filing, answering phones, processing documents, collating and preparing office materials as needed;
• Ability to review hard copy and electronic documents; operate standard office equipment, including, but not limited to: computer, copier/scanner, multi-line phone system; navigate website resources; greet and direct patrons; identify safety concerns;
• Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time;
• Ability to comprehend, communicate, monitor and ensure adequate program support;
• Occasional lifting may be required, frequently less than 5 lb., but may be up to 20 lb.

• TRAVEL REQUIRED: 

  This position requires approximately 20% travel time throughout the state and out of state for training and monitoring.

  Vesting in the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho (PERSI): All employees of the Idaho Department of Education are non-classified. They are appointed by the elected official and serve at the pleasure of the elected official. As such, employees working at a non-classified agency are considered vested in the PERSI retirement system after five (5) consecutive months of service, versus five (5) years of service at a classified agency. 

  Tuition Fee Waiver: All Idaho Department of Education employees in permanent full-time positions may register for instructional courses during any academic period, at any participating state funded institutions of higher education, for a $20.00 nonrefundable registration fee per semester and $5.00 per credit hour charge.
