The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for a full time Microbiologist, Principal in the Boise Dairy Lab. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead critical microbiological testing and research efforts within the dairy industry.

Example of Duties:

Laboratory Evaluation Officer (LEO):

· Prepare annual split sample surveys for FDA certified laboratories for Section 6 and Appendix N testing that meets national standards.

· Evaluate split sample results, prepare a written report, determine level of certification, and notify proper state and federal departments, companies, and industry personnel.

· Perform on-site evaluations to certify analysts and facilities to ensure compliance. Perform investigations regarding deficiencies. Decertify analysts or facilities as necessary.

· Provide training, support and technical assistance to the Dairy Bureau and the dairy industry.

· Attend required training workshops and seminars.


Dairy Laboratory:

· Maintain laboratory certifications.

· Perform required testing.

· Perform required QA/QC testing.

· Prepare reports to be used by the FDA, state, and surveyed laboratories.

· Fulfill responsibilities of an ISDA employee as outlined in the department's Risk Management/Safety Policy.


Minimum Qualification: This qualification is mandatory for the position.

Completion of the core requirements for a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry from an accredited college to include courses in bacteriology, immunology, and pathogenic bacteriology, and closely related classes in life sciences; AND approximately four years of journey level supervised laboratory experience providing considerable knowledge of:

· Standard testing

· Quality control

· Safety practices

· The application of the laws and regulations relative to a microbiology laboratory

OR completion of a Master's degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related science including the above listed courses, AND three years' experience as above.

Experience:

· Implementing laboratory procedures. Typically gained by approximately one year laboratory experience (outside of college requirements) as a lead worker or laboratory project coordinator requiring the implementation of laboratory procedures

· Calibrating, operating, trouble-shooting, and maintaining sophisticated laboratory equipment and instruments. Typically gained by approximately one year laboratory experience (outside of college requirements) with a significant part of assigned duties calibrating, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining sophisticated laboratory equipment and instruments.

OR a combination of education and experience that equates to 8 years of experience doing journey-level supervised laboratory experience providing considerable knowledge of:

· Standard testing

· Quality control

· Safety practices and

· The application of the laws and regulations relative to a microbiology laboratory.


Desired Qualifications: Although not mandatory, possessing these qualifications could potentially impact your application.

· Experience working within the Dairy Industry. Typically gained by at least one year of on-the-job experience.

· Experience working in a diagnostic laboratory. Typically gained by one year of on-the-job experience in a diagnostic laboratory.

· Experience working in Quality Assurance. Typically gained by one year of experience serving in a Quality Assurance role within any laboratory.

· Experience performing Coliform Plate Counts, Somatic Cell quantification, testing for the presence of antibiotics, and testing for pasteurization. Typically gained by 3 months of work experience.

 Temporary appointments from this announcement, serving at least one thousand forty (1,040) hours of continuous service, may be hired as an entrance probationary employee without further examination for the same classification and location as announced.
