The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for an Agriculture Investigator, Senior (Weights & Measures) located in the Boise Area.


Key Responsibilities


  • Inspect and test commercial weighing and measuring devices within an assigned area or as requested by management.
  • Inspect and test net contents of packaged commodities, price verification and labeling requirements at businesses within the assigned area or as requested by management.
  • Utilize time-management and resource-management that optimizes the use of equipment in coordination with man-hours and travel area.
  • Accurately complete inspection reports and daily work reports.. Assist business owners and operators with their individual concerns and problems.
  • Investigate consumer complaints in relation to weights and measures. Maintain assigned and shared equipment and standards.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds of weight and/or equipment on a daily basis. Work around petroleum or liquefied petroleum gas products.
  • Will stand and drive for long periods of time.
  • Travel within an assigned area of the state. Occasional overnight travel of up to a week may be required.
  • A cell phone with an Idaho area code, furnished by the employee, is required for this position and is eligible for reimbursement under the Cell Phone Reimbursement policy.

Mandatory: This qualification is a mandatory requirement.

  • Experience writing narrative reports.
    • Typically gained by twelve (12) months of experience preparing narrative reports such as business reports, investigative reports, research summaries, etc.

Specialty Area: These qualifications are mandatory requirements.

  • Experience performing basic mathematical calculations to determine costs or quantities.
    • Typically gained by completion of coursework equivalent to three (3) credits or a one-semester course where a significant portion of the coursework required the performance of these skills; OR at least six (6) months work experience in a setting where applicant was required to use mathematical calculations to determine the cost and quantity of goods, materials or services.
  • Experience with computer operations/word processing (Competence in Microsoft Word and Excel).
    • Typically gained by: Three (3) months of experience performing word processing functions including saving, retrieving, printing, formatting, deleting, and moving word processing files OR course work equivalent to three (3) credits or a one-semester course in computer operations and word processing which required performing work processing functions to include saving, retrieving, printing, formatting, deleting, and moving word processing.
  • Current Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement; OR, a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.

Desirable Areas: These qualifications are not required; however, if you have the related background it may increase your score.

  • Experience operating a 26,000 lb. GVW or larger vehicle AND have experience backing a vehicle with a trailer attached.
  • Experience as a Weights & Measures Officer or similar position where you applied the National Institute of Standards (Handbook 44) in the course of your duties.

Temporary appointments from this announcement, serving at least one thousand forty (1,040) hours of continuous service, may be hired as an entrance probationary employee without further examination for the same classification and location as announced.
