The Division of Public Health has an opening for a Limited Service Research Analyst, Principal, in our Health Statistics Unit at Central Office in Boise. This position will plan and direct the implementation, and development of the Division's Idaho Violent Death Reporting System (IdVDRS) program. The IdVDRS will collect data from Idaho county coroners, law enforcement, and vital death records to inform stakeholders and the public to improve planning, implementation, and evaluation of violence prevention policies and programs. The incumbent will identify areas of research and make recommendations to management regarding these projects. They will design the research methods, establish procedures to assure the quality of the data, and approve the results of the projects.

This announcement will be used to fill the current vacancy in Boise only. This is Limited-Service position ( which means the position ends when the funding ends). The current cycle of funding ends August 31, 2027. Funding for the subsequent cycle will be applied for. Lengths of appointments are determined by the availability of funds such as grants and/or time frames such as pilot project or program termination. Updated agreements are required every two (2) years.

  • Uses Tableau, SAS and SQL Server to obtain and organize data from various data systems. 
  • Manages a grant including applications, reporting, and budgeting.
  • Supervision of an employee.
  • Maintains regular communication with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with coroners and law enforcement. 
  • Consults with officials of state and federal agencies and private entities to coordinate development and design of research projects. 
  • Compiles and disseminates research results in formats appropriate to various users and makes oral presentations of findings. 
  • Reviews and updates data ensuring output is consistent with study; analyzes data and interprets trends and results of studies and develops conclusions. 
  • Manages database including ensuring data quality and accuracy of the database.
  • Attends trainings, conferences, and seminars to enrich data analysis techniques and remain updated on federal and state reporting requirements.


You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position.   • Experience that demonstrates considerable knowledge of modeling and trend analysis and simulation techniques. Typically gained by completion of at least two semesters of college level statistics in modeling, trend analysis and simulation techniques, AND at least two years of relevant practical experience and training in those areas.
  • Experience planning, developing, and implementing complex research and statistical projects and presenting the results. Typically gained by at least one year of work experience planning, developing, and implementing complex research and statistical projects, and presenting the results. Experience should include independently identifying or defining the scope of the project; analyzing the problem requiring research and statistical analysis; developing the research project; and implementing and presenting the research results. 
  • Experience using and interpreting output of a statistical analysis software package (e.g. SAS, SPSS, STATA, Number Cruncher, Excel, Minitab, etc.). Typically gained by at least one year of experience using and interpreting statistical output from a statistical analysis software package. 

Below is preferred experience. It is not required for the position but applicants with this experience may receive consideration over other applicants.

  • Experience using a data extraction system such as Business Objects, Microsoft Access, SAS, Tableau, SQL Server, or similar program.
