The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is seeking someone with maintenance experience to fill a Utility Craftsman Senior position in our Aeronautics Division. The State of Idaho has 32 airstrips, some in remote locations in the beautiful mountains of Idaho. This position will be responsible for maintaining them which includes traveling via air or state vehicle (up to 75 percent of the time during summer months).

Notice: This position requires a background investigation before a final job offer is made. 

Responsibilities:

  • Construct buildings, storage sheds, garages, bridges, airport runways and hangars, and similar facilities and structures;
  • Remodel offices and buildings by building walls, installing sheetrock and siding, painting, and any other duty required to complete the project;
  • Operate equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, dump truck, tractor/trailer transport, forklift, roller, cranes, scissors trucks, snow plows, and bridge inspection equipment;
  • Design items to be built or fabricated;
  • Lay out, cut, weld and fabricate steel plate and beams;
  • Read plans and blueprints; use transit and level and run stakes for surveys;
  • Build concrete forms, and place, finish and repair concrete;
  • Lay bricks and blocks;
  • Build and remodel wooden structures and special carpentry items;
  • Maintain and repair plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems and pump stations, pipes, sinks, lavatories, septic tanks and electrical wiring, lights, ballasts, switches, and receptacles;
  • Keep records and reports on progress of projects; function as lead worker over project assistants;


Considerable knowledge of: 

  • Construction and building trades work; 
  • Construction methods.


Experience: 

  • Operating, transporting and maintaining equipment associated with construction and building trades and grounds maintenance; 
  • Placing and finishing concrete; 
  • Performing rough and finish carpentry; 
  • Performing maintenance plumbing and electrical work; 
  • Reading/interpreting plans, specifications and blueprints; 
  • Using and maintaining building trades hand and power tools; 
  • Providing construction and trades direction and training to others; 
  • Evaluating the construction and trades performance of others;
  • Identifying, procuring and organizing materials and equipment necessary for construction projects. 

Requires a valid driver's license

Additional requirements

  • May travel up to 75 percent of the time during summer months;
  • CDL Type A within 60 days of hire (ITD will provide training);
  • Possess a Professional Applicators License or the ability to acquire one within 1 year. 
  • Pre-employment drug testing, and random drug and alcohol tests.
