The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has an exciting new opportunity for a full-time Engineer, Technical 1 in Boise on the State of Idaho Chinden Campus, located at 11331 W. Chinden Blvd, Building 8.
This position can also be filled by candidates who currently do not qualify for the Technical level but qualify for one of the three lower level engineering positions with potential for advancement through the engineer path.
The Commission regulates investor-owned or privately-owned utilities that provide gas, water, electricity, or some telephone services for profit as well as overseeing the safe operation of railroads and enforces state and federal regulations safeguarding the transportation of hazardous materials by rail.

Summary:
The Engineer, Technical 1 will perform advanced, specialized, and technical engineering analysis requiring the application of diversified engineering principles and practices to accomplish the goals expected; act as an agency consultant on specialized engineering applications; perform related work. The selected candidate for this position will function with considerable autonomy in the specialty of public utilities. The incumbent will be considered the regional representative in these specialties which would include statewide implications.
Example of Duties:
Positions established at the technical engineer level may be underfilled at the staff, associate, or intern levels. After successfully completing a training plan, meeting the minimum qualifications for the technical engineer level, and receiving a professional engineering license, the employee will be reclassified and compensated as a technical engineer.
Minimum Qualifications:
Technical Engineer Level: (Salary $35.00 - $37.00)
Licensure: Licensed in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE), or eligibility for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12
AND Valid Driver’s License.
AND
At least four years’ experience post certification: coordinating with State and local government operations in Public Utilities or a related field (electric, water, gas, telecommunications, energy industry, water projects, solid waste, dam safety, etc.); evaluating engineering projects and making decisions relative to their merit; writing engineering reports and related correspondence; reviewing engineering analyses; making oral presentations to groups relative to the merits of engineering applications.
A master’s degree in a related field can qualify for one year of additional experience. A PHD in a related field can qualify for three years of experience.
Staff Engineer Level ($28.49 - $32.28)
Licensure: Licensed in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE); or eligible for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12
AND Valid Driver’s License
AND
At least three years’ experience post certification: analyzing, interpreting, and applying federal, state, and local laws when applying professional engineering principles and practices; writing technical engineering reports; evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard engineering plans, specifications, and standards in completing projects; coordinating field work and inspecting projects or facilities for compliance with standards
Associate Level: ($25.02 - $28.36)
Candidates must have one of the following:
Certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer-in-Training
OR certification from another jurisdiction that included graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET)
AND
Valid driver’s license
AND
At least two years’ experience post-certification: analyzing, interpreting and applying federal, state and local laws when applying professional engineering principles and practices; writing technical engineering reports; evaluating, selecting and adapting standard engineering plans, specifications and standards in completing projects; coordinating field work and inspecting projects or facilities for compliance with standards.
Intern Level: ($19.69 - $22.31)
Candidates must meet one of the following:
Graduation from a four-year Engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) PLUS within six (6) months of hire receive certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer Intern
OR Certification as an EIT from another jurisdiction that included graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET)
OR graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) PLUS verification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience (For All Levels)
· Experience utilizing process simulation models, linear programming models, and other types of optimization models in developing and/or evaluating complex operations and processes
· Experience performing quantitative and statistical analysis of technical, financial, and/or economic data utilizing sound engineering economic principles, and/or robust statistical methods
· Experience identifying or verifying root causes of technical issues, requiring engineering knowledge to identify and solve
