Summary:

The mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime.

The Department is offering a one-time $1500 sign-on bonus for newly hired correctional officers, as well as a potential $1500 yearly retention bonus for the first 5 years of employment! 

Responsibilities:

Correctional officers provide safety and security, while assisting in controlling, directing, and monitoring incarcerated individuals’ activities and movement. This includes maintaining security of the institution and controlling movement within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures. Additionally, correctional officers role model appropriate interactions and reinforce positive behavior change among incarcerated individuals.

 The Department envisions a safer Idaho with fewer people in its correctional system and values integrity, respect, and positive attitude. As such, successful candidates for correctional officer will possess these character traits, along with problem solving skills, teamwork, and the desire to impact positive change. Other essential functions of this position include:

  1. Respond to emergency situations 
  2. Assist with facility operations to ensure department policy and security procedures are followed
  3. Conduct multiple daily counts of incarcerated individuals to ensure safety and security, as well as maintain logbooks
  4. Escort or transport incarcerated individuals and property within different areas of the institution or other locations
  5. Review and complete institutional forms, court documents, and various reports with attention to detail and accuracy 
  6. Inventory and search property, housing unit living areas and commonly used areas, and conduct unclothed body and/or pat searches 
  7. Have frequent interactions with incarcerated individuals that demonstrate professional boundaries and promote positive change 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Be a US citizen
  2. Be at least 18 years of age
  3. Possess a high school diploma or GED transcript
  4. Meet entrance requirements established by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy for correction officers.(IDAPA Rules)
  5. Experience using a personal computer to enter, retrieve, and edit information
  6. Not currently on felony or misdemeanor probation
  7. Eligible to own/possess or receive a firearm under the provisions of state or federal law
