The position requires an individual who has a strong desire to pursue a career in Diesel Mechanics.

The Idaho Transportation Department is hiring a temporary Diesel Technician (intern) in our District 6 office, in Rigby, Idaho

The primary function of this position will be to assist our Mechanics in diagnosing, repairing, and service work for a wide variety of light-to-heavy duty vehicles. The successful candidate would play a critical role, working directly with our shop staff to facilitate these job duties. This opportunity provides interns with practical real-world experience and exposure to a variety of mechanical tasks.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to

  • Work side by side with a certified Diesel Technician and learn to repair engines, steering and suspension, Diesel and automotive HVAC systems, and much more
  • Build experience and skills as a Diesel mechanic across a wide range of vehicles
  • Perform routine maintenance procedures including oil changes, tire rotations, fluid flushes, etc.
  • Perform multi-point vehicle inspections
  • Work as part of a team to solve technical problems quickly and effectively
  • You will use your skills to get vehicles ready for our employees, ensuring they are safe and reliable
  • Follow and promote our high standards of safety, cleanliness, and organization
  • Working together with other technicians you will solve problems, meet deadlines, and deliver great results

Qualifications

  • A strong motivation to learn a mechanical service career path
  • Attending a Diesel/Automotive Program or recent graduate preferred
  • Some knowledge and experience in repairing vehicles preferred
  • Shows a high level of interest, willingness to learn, and embraces new ideas
  • Good communication skills and strong attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and exemplifies a positive attitude
  • A valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds
  • Be able to work with tools on vehicles lifted above their head
  • Work in tight spaces as dictated by the vehicle's needed repair
  • Demonstrate the dexterity required to efficiently operate hand tools
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods throughout the workday
  • Drive manual transmission vehicles
