Summary:

The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) is seeking a Financial Specialist, Sr. to join our dynamic team in Boise, Idaho. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in ensuring our agency’s financial operations and reporting meet the highest standards of integrity and excellence. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and review financial statements and payroll reports using the State’s LUMA enterprise reporting system.
  2. Incumbents use their professional background to assist in the development of budgets and preparation of other financial documents.
  3. Evaluate complex financial issues and offer expert guidance and solutions to stakeholders.
  4. Develop and maintain accounting systems, plan, and review financial operations, and manage difficult or confidential financial matters.
  5. Investigate and assess financial documents and other transactions to guarantee adherence to federal and state laws, regulations, and accounting standards.
  6. Utilize internal resources to resolve financial challenges and assist in drafting responses to inquiries from legislators and other external stakeholders.
  7. Identify trends using research and analysis for use in reporting and for recommending changes to business practices. 
  8. This position will be required to perform all fiscal support functions such as but not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, interagency payments, budget change requests, year-end closing packages and other fiscal or administrative duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Good knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Typically gained by at least four years of professional work experience as a staff accountant, or equivalent, applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) OR at least 12 semester credits in Accounting, to include Intermediate Accounting I and II or equivalent.
  2. Experience developing and preparing financial documents. Typically gained by at least one year of full time work experience.
  3. Experience using a personal computer to develop, analyze, and report on financial data. Typically gained by at least one year of work experience using a personal computer to develop, analyze and report on financial data as a regularly assigned job duty.
  4. Experience analyzing financial activities and recommending management action. Typically gained by at least one year of experience preparing routine and specialty analysis and recommending management action.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Experience researching and analyzing financial documents to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations and accounting principles
  2. Intermediate experience using IBM COGNOS Reporting and Dashboards or other database programs
  3. Intermediate to advanced experience with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Adobe.
  4. Resourceful, self-starter with the ability to network with others to gather information and prioritize shifting deadlines.
