Summary:

The Commission of Pardons and Parole (COPP) is currently recruiting for a full-time Legal Assistant. The successful candidate will serve a very important role in the agency and will be responsible for timely responses to public records requests, reviewing documents for compliance with statutes and IDAPA code, responding to public inquiries regarding COPP processes, and a variety of other important tasks related to the Commission’s hearings for parole, pardon, commutation, and the restoration of firearms rights.

Responsibilities:

1. Review and respond to public records requests
2. Review and process materials required for various COPP hearings
3. Maintain important COPP databases
4. Review and submit IDAPA Rules and legislation at the request of the Executive Director
5. Review various work items to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and policies
6. Respond to questions regarding COPP hearing processes and procedures
7. Review and respond to subpoenas and other legal documents
8. Work with the assigned COPP Deputy Attorney General

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Some knowledge of supervisory practices. This is typically gained through completion of college coursework or workshops (of at least one day) specifically covering supervisory practices; OR supervisory or team leader experience that formally involved giving work assignments, providing direction to employees, and monitoring/evaluating the work of others (Such experience on a fill-in basis is non-qualifying unless it occurred for a period equivalent to a minimum of three or more consecutive months.).
2. Experience in records management. This is typically gained by at least one or more years of work experience using record management systems that included paper records, financial records, or digital records.
3. Experience interpreting, applying, or explaining state or federal laws, rules, and policies. Typically gained by at least one year of work experience with responsibility for reviewing documents or actions for compliance with laws, regulations, and/or policies, OR through explaining to others how laws, regulations, or policies apply to specific situations, OR some combination of experience and paralegal studies, or completion of related college level courses.
4. Experience researching and reviewing legal documents for compliance with laws and to identify and resolve complex issues. Typically gained by at least one year of experience performing research and analysis of complex or technical material requiring in-depth program knowledge to determine if requirements were met and if they complied with established laws and/or policies. Experience may include relevant college level courses requiring in-depth analysis.
5. Experience creating correspondence and documents using word processing software. Typically gained by at least one year of experience preparing a variety of business correspondence/documents.

Specialty Qualifications:

1. Experience or knowledge of court processes

Desirable Qualifications:

1. High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products – Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, etc.
2. Fluent in Spanish
3. Experience with criminal databases, including iCourt
