The Idaho Transportation Department is hiring a Transportation Technician Senior - Bridge Inspection Trainee position for our Bridge Asset Management team in Boise. This position will be trained to perform bridge inspections and writing reports for each bridge. The position will assist on planning, preparing, and performing initial, routine, in-depth, fracture critical, confined space and underwater inspection of bridged as per National Bridge Inspection Standards.

This position is established at the Engineering Assistant, Transportation Staff level and may be underfilled at the transportation technician senior level or engineering transportation technician principal level. Upon successful completion of a training plan and when minimum qualifications for the Engineering Assistant, Transportation Staff level are met, the incumbent will be reclassified to an Engineering Assistant, Transportation Staff and compensated accordingly.

Note: This position can expect to travel up to 180 days per year.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Assist in performing routine and in-depth bridge inspections
  • Prepare computer generated reports in accordance with National Bridge Inspections Standards (NBIS) using Pontis software system
  • Spend a minimum of one day per year in the field with each consultant bridge inspector for accuracy and conformance to NBI standards
  • Assist underwater inspection team
  • Meet with district personnel to discuss maintenance and bridge repairs needed in the districts
  • Operate controls for bucket on under bridge inspection truck
  • Meet with and assist outside agencies with bridge repairs and needs
  • Perform non-destructive testing of bridge members (e.g. mag particle, die penetrant, ultrasound, chain drag and sounding of concrete members)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure:

  • Valid driver's license

Good knowledge of:

  • Computer systems and applications used in engineering/construction and maintenance

Experience:

  • Using engineering plans, specifications, maps, charts and/or GIS data
  • Providing direction and training on highway maintenance or construction inspection to others
  • Identifying and organizing appropriate materials and equipment for maintenance or construction projects.

Desired Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of: Transportation management systems used in construction or maintenance
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience in bridge design, construction, and/or maintenance.
