Southwest District Health (SWDH) is recruiting a Senior Health Education Specialist (HES) to join the dedicated group of public health professionals in their Community Health Program with the Division of Environmental and Community Health Services.

As a Senior HES and public health employee, you will serve an active role in improving the health of your community. As part of a small, but mighty team, you will be responsible for implementing health education programming related to promoting healthy development and reducing risky behaviors among teens (ex. may include CATCH My Breath, Families Talking Together, Guiding Good Choices, etc.) and facilitating a community health action team.

Our generous benefits package elevates the total compensation value for a full/part-time HES, Senior. Our offering transforms the base pay range from $29.43 - $34.62/hour to an estimated total compensation value, including benefits, of $42.60 - $48.95/hour, showcasing the value we invest in your well-being and professional growth.


Typical Duties:

Candidates must be able to complete the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation and meet all the mandatory qualifications of the position.

  • Lead community health assessment initiatives, engaging diverse stakeholders for program planning.
  • Coordinate and deliver tailored health education programs, ensuring relevance to target audiences.
  • Establish collaborative agreements to facilitate program implementation, including MOUs and contracts.
  • Evaluate program progress and community health status, utilizing tools like logic models.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to community members and partners as a content expert.
  • Develop effective health education messages and materials, assessing communication efforts.
  • Facilitate routine community coalition meetings, guiding the identification of priority health needs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of community health action plans.
  • Identify resources to support coalition action plan implementation, potentially assisting in grant writing efforts.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for various stakeholders, including elected officials and Board of Health members.


Minimum Qualifications:

You must possess all the minimum qualifications listed below to qualify for this position. All required experience and/or education must be listed under the work history section of this application OR on your resume and must include a detailed explanation of your roles and responsibilities at each relevant employer.

Minimum Qualifications (MQ):

  • Good knowledge of:
         - Public health education principles and practices to include needs assessment, information dissemination and community organization relating to common health problems
         - Basic disease etiologies and preventive strategies
         - Survey methods and basic statistics used to collect and interpret data
         - Training methods

    “Good knowledge” typically means applicants should possess journeyman level expertise, which can be gained through either a closely related bachelor's degree, 2-4 upper division college courses related to the subject and 2-4 years of mid-level work experience closely related to the subject, or a combination of coursework and experience that represents the knowledge level above.

  • Approximately 1-2 years of related work experience in the following areas:
         - Developing or reviewing, and evaluating health-related informational material
         - Developing, implementing and evaluating public health education programs

MQ Specialty:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Ideal Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health or related field
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)
