Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is recruiting for a Sign Fabricator to join our Mobility Services team located at our District 3 location in Boise. This position could be the perfect career opportunity if you have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. This position will be responsible for the design, layout, and fabrication of traffic control and informational signs for state highways and/or to be used in a sign and graphics shop to produce a variety of signs.

Incumbents in the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD)'s highway sign and graphics shop are frequently exposed to toxic chemicals, fumes, noise, carpentry dust, power tools, and moving machinery and are therefore required to wear protective safety equipment including goggles, respirators, face shield, and ear protector.

NOTE: This position requires a valid driver's license.

Design and layout

  • Operates and maintains PC-based computer-aided design/manufacturing systems for traffic sign fabrication to include various software (Roland Versacamm, Sign Cad, CorelDraw, Flexi-Letter, Flexi-Sign) and database programs, scanners, digitizing tablets, printers, and plotters;
  • Lays out and fabricates special and large diagrammatic signs;
  • Uses specialized equipment materials to layout and manufacture stencils and screens for printing:
  • Provides digital proof for customer review and approval.

Sign Fabrication

  • Designs, lays out, and fabricates large, extruded, aluminum interstate and defense highway signs in accordance with federal and state specifications;
  • Designs, lays out, and fabricates a variety of signs for business use in compliance with institutional, state, and federal signage;
  • Performs carpentry and sheet metal duties in the manufacture of aluminum, and plywood substrate materials;
  • Operates and maintains all associated equipment including wood- and metal-cutting band saws, circular saws, drill presses, punches, finishing machines, grinders, routers, scroll saws, pneumatic drills, rivet guns, metal shears, and corner machines;
  • Lays out and completes final fabrication of special signs using die and plotter-cut legends conforming to Federal Highway Administration standard alphabets and spacing requirements;
  • Manufactures and maintains screen-printing frames;
  • May perform leadwork duties.

Screen printing and substrate sheeting/preparation:

  • Performs screen printing of traffic-control sign panels and decals in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
  • Stretch and prepare frames for screen printing.
  • Applies reflective sheeting and vinyl to various substrates by using automated and manual squeeze roll applicators.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of the characteristics and uses of various materials for sign fabrication.
  • Experience: using hand and power tools and equipment associated with sign fabrication.
  • Physical ability to: frequently bend and stoop; lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds; stand on concrete floor for up to 4 hours during a normal shift.


Specialty Areas:

  • Experience - will be required to operate a small truck and forklift;
  • Experience operating PC-based design software and digital wide-format printers and plotters.
