Information Technology Services (ITS), currently has an opening for an IT Network Engineer III position specializing as a Datacenter Engineer at our Chinden office in Boise. This position provides critical datacenter engineering and support services across a broad range of enterprise datacenter class networks serving a multitude of state agencies and will manage, troubleshoot, and implement complex computer, data, voice and video networking infrastructure; including network administration, installation and maintenance of network infrastructure; provide leadership in the design, enhancement, implementation, and consultation on a complex datacenter environment; support, manage, maintain, troubleshoot and design various datacenter technologies.
The selected individual must possess an in-depth knowledge of a wide range of enterprise grade datacenter network equipment from various vendors in order to contribute to effective 24/7/365 network operations. The selected individual must also possess a thorough understanding of industry standard network technologies. This position will administer advanced network management systems, manage network performance, troubleshoot network problems, and coordinate and implement expanded, new, and upgraded networks across the State. They must have the ability to work as part of an on-call, 24/7/365 shift rotation schedule and be able to travel occasionally throughout the State.
The ideal candidate would have the following technical skills:
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or higher certification;
- Juniper Networks Certified Specialist (JNCIS) or higher certification;
- Experience with Juniper Junos, and Cisco IOS, IOS-XE, NXOS;
- Experience with IP address management best practices;
- Strong knowledge of routing and switching protocols including but not limited to MPLS, EVPN/VXLAN, OSPF, BGP, spanning tree, VPC, VRRP and HSRP;
- Cabling experience in Telco or data center environment; Working knowledge of fiber-optic and ethernet standards;
- Experience developing and maintaining network document with a minimum of 2 years of experience with Microsoft Visio;
- Please note: The successful candidate will be required to pass multiple, comprehensive fingerprint-based background checks specific to the agencies ITS supports.
Example of duties:
- Provides hands-on support and management of statewide Network operations to deliver mission critical Network services to a diverse customer base on a 24/7/365 basis;
- Provides direct customer support for problem resolution and escalation;
- Supports Network Operations on a 24/7/365 basis that may include: deployments, infrastructure upgrades, hardware rollouts, troubleshooting, administration, and other related Network operation functions;
- Configures, upgrades, installs, troubleshoots, and manages network switches, routers, and other associated network devices;
- Configures, upgrades, installs, and manages advanced network diagnostic, configuration and management tools and systems;
- Manages and maintains detailed network documentation;
- Undertakes detailed network designs used to support a given technology initiative or program.
- Develops detailed network diagrams and plans to support existing networks, or network development and enhancements.
- Troubleshoots network problems utilizing a variety of network management software tools and equipment.
- Works as part of a project team to design, develop and implement networks to support a wide range of systems and functionality.
- Monitors and reports on network performance, availability;
- Assists in, or leads the planning of network enhancements, maintenance and capacity expansion including budget development and forecasting.
- Some positions may have on-going leadership or formal supervisory responsibility for a small IT team.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Considerable knowledge of current LAN, WAN or SD-WAN networks that support voice, data, video, and wireless client connections.
Typically gained by a bachelor’s degree directly related to information technology OR at least four years of work experience with LAN, WAN or SD-WAN technologies in a medium to large business environment AND by possession of a professional vendor certification in router, switch, or SD-WAN technologies. Experience must be within the last two years. (Definitions: LAN = Local Area Network, WAN = Wide Area Network, SD-WAN = Software Defined Wide Area Network) - Experience planning, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting networks across a wide range of network technologies; resolving network problems; working with end users to develop and implement information technology solutions for a wide variety of uses in a business and enterprise environment.
Typically met by at least four years of full-time work experience where planning, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting networks across a wide range of network technologies, and supporting a large business network was part of your primary job responsibilities. Experience must be within the last two years. - Experience with Software Defined Networking (SD-WAN) or in both local and wide-area network management, administration, design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
Typically met by at least four years of full-time work experience where network management, administration, design, implementation and troubleshooting in a large LAN/WAN or SD-WAN environment supporting a large organization, was part of your primary job responsibilities. Experience must be within the last two years. - Experience with Physical layer network topologies including experience in the design and implementation.

Experience must be within the last two years. - Experience with Wireless network design, implementation, troubleshooting and management in large-scale wireless deployments.
Typically gained by at least four years of full-time job experience in wireless network design, implementation, troubleshooting and management in large-scale wireless deployments. Experience must be within the last two years. - Experience as a technical lead implementing or supporting network projects and support teams.
Typically gained by at least four years of full-time job experience where you worked as a technical lead implementing or supporting network projects OR at least two years of experience supervising a network team as part of your primary job responsibilities. Experience must be within the last two years.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate design concepts for implementation, including written and graphical documentation. Typically met by at least two years of full-time work experience using Microsoft Visio for graphically documenting networks was part of your primary job responsibilities.
- Experience working with non-technical customers who are having problems with their network connectivity. Typically met by at least two years of full-time work experience addressing customer complaints and resolving their network related issues to their complete satisfaction was part of your primary job responsibilities.
- Knowledge of basic network security concepts. Typically met by at least two years of full-time work experience staying current on network security principles and trends was part of your primary job responsibilities.
